School-provided Services for GT Kids
Texas law is fairly vague when it comes to specific services schools need to provide for their GT students. The state mandates that GT students “are assured an array of
learning opportunities that are commensurate with their abilities and that
emphasize content in the four (4) foundation curricular areas,” (Texas Education Agency, 2012) and that GT
students are grouped -- at least 3 in any given class -- for curricular opportunities (although a separate GT class
is not mandated).
Texas law does require all teachers of gifted students to have 30 hours, plus a 6-hour yearly update, of professional development in GT education. Development must include the "nature and needs of G/T students, identification and assessment of G/T students’ needs, and curriculum and instruction for G/T students" (Texas Education Agency, 2012).
